Caroline relaxed, smiling again as she stood to see me off. “I’m sure you’ll make it special for him,” she said warmly, 

As I walked out of Caroline’s house, I took a deep breath and called Leo. 

The least I could do was wish him a happy birthday. 

“Happy birthday,” I said when he answered the phone. 

There was a pause on the other end of the line. “I didn’t realize you remembered,” Leo said after a moment, his voice soft with surprise, “Treglad.” 

I smiled at his reaction, but I felt a pang of guilt again. “Of course I remembered.” 

“Are you free tonight?” Leo asked, sounding more cheerful now. “I’d like to take you to dinner.” 

“Sure,” I agreed, grateful for the chance to make up for my earlier forgetfulness. 

When I arrived at the restaurant later that evening, Leo was already there, waiting for me. 

He looked more dashing than usual, dressed in formal attire, his eyes lighting up as soon as he saw me. 

The atmosphere felt warm and intimate, the soft lighting casting a golden glow over everything.

Leo chuckled softly. “Even though you didn’t prepare a gift, just having you here is the best present I could ask for.” 

I laughed, feeling some of the tension melt away. 

As we talked and shared a meal, drinking red wine and laughing at old memories, I could see that the weight of recent events was lifting off his shoulders, even if only for a short time.
