To my relief, he didn’t. With a resigned sigh, he agreed and told me to be careful. 

As nightfall settled in, the academy grounds grew quiet. 

The streetlamps cast a soft, white glow across the deserted pathways, their light as gentle as moonlight. 

The trees lining the streets swayed slightly in the cool evening breeze, their leaves rustling softly, adding a whispering undertone to the night.

“I’ve been doing some digging,” Rolin began, his voice low and serious. 

“The group of hunters who chased your parents–they’re the same ones who came after me back then. They were pure bounty hunters, working for money.” 

The mention of those hunters sent a shiver down my spine. 

Hunters were a ruthless breed, people who hunted others for a living. 

While most races had signed peace treaties and pacts over the years, hunters were still out there, taking on bloody contracts for the highest bidder. 

The thought that these same hunters might have played a role in my mother’s fate made my stomach churn. 

Rolin continued, his expression darkening. 

“I’ve tracked down one of the hunters from that group. He admitted that they took on a contract to go after your parents. But… something happened. Your mother managed to get away. They never completed the job.” 

I held my breath, my heart racing as I processed his words. 

“So… she might still be alive?” 

The question escaped my lips before I could stop it, the hope in my voice undeniable. 

Rolin nodded slowly. 

“It’s possible. But her exact whereabouts… I don’t know. I’m sorry.” 

The tears I had been holding back began to spill over.

I had planned to remarry Elizabeth after she won and have a big wedding for her.

But now, as I watched them, that hope crumbled.

The smiles she had given me, the words she spoke, the times we shared–they were real, weren’t they?

I decided to wait a little longer.

I gripped the box with the diamond ring tightly in my hand, my knuckles whitening as I tried to suppress the whirlwind of emotions inside me. 

I wanted to turn around and leave, to walk away from this scene before it shattered me completely. 

But my eyes, almost against my will, were drawn back to the two figures standing under the streetlight not far away.
