Chloe looked shocked. ‘I thought you were staying a few more days?”
“Got some work issues I need to handle. But I might come back to visit,” I said, keeping it vague.
Even after quitting Logan’s company, I’d still need to work somewhere to support myself.
“Right. Everyone leaves eventually. Just this old lady stuck here.” Her words hit me hard.
They also sparked an idea. “Why don’t you come with me, Mrs. Sutton?”
“Come with you?” She looked surprised.
“Yeah! I’ll show you around the city.” I smiled, excited about the idea. She’d become like a grandmother

But Chloe shook her head. “No, sweetie. These old legs aren’t what they used to be. I’d just slow your down.”
“Don’t say that! Come on, just for a few days?” I held her arm, pleading.

My eyes welled up. I hugged her. “I’ll miss you, Mrs. Sutton.”
“Miss me? You should miss Ashton. He’s such a good man. But you hurt him so much he had to leave.” Chloe’s words burst my emotional bubble. Wait Ashton left because I rejected him?
Before I could respond, Chloe patted my hand. “Elaine, Ashton’s really special. Just… think about it.”
“Okay,” I agreed.
At the pool hall, Logan flubbed his shot, balls scattering everywhere.
Caleb wiped his forehead. “Still no word from Elaine?”
Logan stayed quiet. Caleb lined up a tricky shot, sinking it perfectly.
“Weird. She never pushed back before when you talked to her like that. Why’s she being so stubborn
now?” Caleb wondered.
Logan remembered Elaine’s pool hall visit. “What exactly did she ask you?”
Caleb pocketed another ball smoothly, perching on the table’s edge. “Like I told you – she asked about you, Selene, and Liam back in school. I told her straight up nothing happened. So don’t blame this on
me.”
“Nobody’s blaming you. Why so defensive?” Logan snapped.
Caleb eyed the last ball. “Do you really not know why she left? Why she wouldn’t even get the marriage license?”
“She’s just acting out. I’ve spoiled her too much.” Logan grumbled.
The license thing had his parents giving him the cold shoulder, and office gossip suggested Elaine caught him cheating.

*Spoiled her?” Caleb laughed. “Man, you never spoiled her. You just got used to her following you. around. You think she can’t live without you. That’s why you say you’re not interested and won’t even look for her.”
“How am I supposed to find her? Put up missing person posters worldwide?” Logan was still clueless.
Caleb sank the last ball with a perfect shot, sweeping the table.
Logan snorted, “Another round.”
“Logan…” Caleb started as Logan lined up. “Elaine loves you, but her love has pride. She wouldn’t just walk unless you really disappointed her.”
“What did I do?” Logan was getting annoyed.
“That’s for you to figure out.” Caleb paused. “Some people never see each other again after one bad. moment. Ask yourself if you really love her, or if you’re just used to having her around.”
“Even if you’re not in love, she’s been with your family ten years. At least care about her like a sister. Find her. If something happens, you’ll never forgive yourself.”
Logan missed his shot and stormed out, throwing down his cue.

the way,” Caleb called after him, “heard the Drake’s long–lost son is coming back after 20 years. He ‘s supposed to be impressive. Better move fast if you want that family connection.”
“And Elaine… if you care at all, swallow your pride and make the first move.
Watching Logan leave without responding. Caleb muttered, “You’re gonna regret this one day.”
