Logan‘ eyes flickered with surprise as he turned to look at me. Soon, a flash of anger appeared in his deep gaze.
“Elaine, there’s a time and place for your stubbornness. Selene is-”
“I’m your fiancée,” I interrupted, cutting him off. Just saying those words made me feel utterly humiliated,
When I used to watch scenes like this on TV, I’d always think the female lead was too weak, that no man was worth such effort. But now that it was happening to me, I finally understood how it felt.
Selene is pregnant. I can’t let anything happen to her!” Logan insisted, taking a step back.
A few steps later, he turned completely and ran out the door.
In the end, between Selene and me, he didn’t choose me.
Sitting there, I watched him catch up to Selene outside. They struggled briefly until she clung to his clothes and collapsed into his arms.
I lowered my head. I couldn’t bear to look any longer.
Whether or not there was anything between them, his choice today gave me all the answers I needed about my wavering heart.
In the end, I barely ate a bite of that expensive meal, yet I still paid the three–thousand–dollar bill.
I didn’t go back to Mercer Estate. Instead, I went to Nora’s place.
“Have you really decided to break up?” Nora, my gynecologist friend, asked as she massaged my acupoints, relieving the torment of my menstrual
pain.
While she could heal my body, she couldn’t mend my heart.
“Yes,” I replied, sprawled on her bed, my face turned at an angle where she couldn’t see my reddened eyes.

“You might find it harder to end things with him than you think,” Nora said after a pause. “Don’t forget–you’re still Logan‘ assistant.”
“I’ll resign,” I said firmly. I’d already made up my mind on the way over.
Nora nodded. “Alright. But even if you quit and stop working with Logan, what about the Mercer family? They’ve raised you for years. You can’t just sever ties with them because you’re breaking up with Logan. As long as you’re connected to the Mercers, you’ll still be tied to him.”
Her words hit me hard. She was right–I owed the Mercer family for taking care of me for ten years.
“That’s a separate matter. I’ll explain it to Tessa. I can still be her
goddaughter,” I said with determination.
Nora didn’t argue further. She only added, “Whatever you decide, I’ll support you.”
That night, I turned off my phone and, for the first time in days, managed to fall asleep without endlessly brooding.
When I woke up, Nora had already prepared breakfast.
“Beet juice. It’ll give you energy,” Nora said, glancing at my face. “Drink up.”
I appreciated her effort and drank two cups. I even ate two eggs.
Nora had an early shift, and I needed to go to the office, so we went downstairs together. But as soon as we stepped outside, we saw Logan leaning against his car, a bouquet of white roses in his hands.
“He’s probably here to apologize,” Nora whispered, nudging me lightly before walking ahead.
As she passed Logan, she casually remarked, “Women can experience heavy bleeding if they’re too upset during their periods. Do you understand what I’m saying, Mr. Mercer?”
She left it at that and walked away.
The next moment, Logan approached me.

“Sorry about last night,” he said, holding out the flowers.
But I didn’t take them. Instead, I reminded him, “Logan, we broke up.”

Since I’d said it last night, I wasn’t going to take it back just because of one gesture of goodwill.
His expression stiffened slightly. “Given what happened last night, I was afraid something might happen to her. You know Liam was his parents‘ only child. Now, Selene’s baby is their only hope. If anything were to happen-”
I understood his unfinished sentence.
“So, from now on, anything related to her will always be your priority, right?” I asked coldly.
Logan was silent for two seconds before replying, “Things will be different once the baby is born.”
I started to laugh bitterly. As I turned, the newly risen sun stung my eyes.
“Logan,” I said, looking at him. “There will still be other problems after the baby is born. The baby might get sick or have an accident. As long as you keep using this child as an excuse, you and Selene will always be entangled. And I will always be the one you abandon.”
Logan didn’t respond immediately. My words hung heavily in the air.
I made my stance clear. “Logan, if we get married, I don’t want my husband constantly taking care of another woman.”
“Elaine, give me some time. I’ll sort this out,” Logan said, his eyes betraying
his internal conflict.
“What is there to sort out? She’s someone else’s wife. Even if she needs
help, it doesn’t have to be you. And…” I paused. “You weren’t Liam’s only close friend. There’s Caleb and a few others. Why are you the only one so deeply involved?”
His emotions were written all over his face as he answered, “Because I was the only one with Liam when the accident happened.”

Hearing the pain in his voice and sensing the guilt he carried after Liam’s death, I asked, “Logan, did you do something to betray Liam?”
“Elaine,” Logan said sharply, his voice cold. “Do you really have to ask that?”
“Yes, because it’s affecting me now.” I pressed my lips together before continuing, “Logan, let’s break up.”
“This way, you won’t have to be torn between me and Selene. Besides…” I hesitated. “You’re not interested in me. Why keep making things hard for yourself?”
As I said this, I realized just how deeply his words from that day still hurt
- me.
“Elaine!” Logan snapped, his anger peaking. After a moment, he asked coldly, “Do you really want to break up? Are you sure?”
“Yes, I’m sure,” I said without hesitation.
“Fine. Don’t regret it,” Logan replied. He turned sharply and tossed the white roses into a nearby trash can.
After he left, I stared at the discarded white roses, my eyes stinging with
unshed tears.
He had told me not to regret it.
Those three words revealed his true thoughts. He probably believed that I could never truly leave him, which was why he felt he could hurt me over and over again without consequence.
