My body tensed as Miles gripped my shoulders tightly, giving me no chance to escape.
This feeling of being controlled by someone else–it was unpleasant. I didn’t like it.
I frowned. “Miles…”
Before I could say more, he interrupted me.
“Elaine, Logan is my brother, so I can’t speak ill of him. But he’s an exception. You can’t give up your principles because of him.”
His grip was firm, and I could feel his tension. He was trembling slightly, his gaze piercing and filled with emotion. His voice carried a pleading edge.
“Elaine, finding a boyfriend isn’t a game. You need to be careful. One wrong move can ruin your life.”
Seeing how earnest he was, I felt a pang of guilt. For a moment, I considered telling him the truth–that Ashton was only a temporary boyfriend.
But I dismissed the thought quickly. The whole purpose of bringing Ashton into this situation was to end any lingering hopes the Mercer family might have about my future with Logan. If I told Miles the truth, it would defeat the point of this charade.
“Miles, I’m not a child. I know what I’m doing,” I said firmly.
“But you’ve only known Ashton for a few days!” His voice rose, frustration spilling over.
Seeing his disbelief, I decided to drop a bombshell. “I’ve only known him for a few days, but our relationship began when I was in Amaty.”
I said it calmly but deliberately, knowing it would sting. I regarded Miles as an older brother and didn’t want to be too harsh, but I also needed to set boundaries.
Miles froze, his eyes widening in shock. His grip on my shoulders tightened, and I could feel the hurt radiating from him.
He stared at me, silent, his gaze filled with disbelief, disappointment, and unmistakable pain.
I tried to soften the blow. “Miles, some connections are just meant to be. Maybe Ashton and I are
destined.”
At my words, I felt Miles’s body waver slightly. Though his grip on my shoulders didn’t completely loosen, it wasn’t as firm as before.
We stood there in tense silence until Alex appeared out of nowhere, his cheerful voice cutting through the moment.
“Ms. Hart, you have a guest. Why not go to your office?”
Alex glanced at Miles and added, “Come to the office. I’ll have someone make a pot of good tea.”
Miles composed himself quickly and released me. He declined politely, “No need, thank you.”
Without another word, he turned and walked away, not looking back.
The sense of loss that hung in the air was suffocating.
It took me a while to collect myself and make my way back to my office. On the way, I decided to ask

Alex for some time off so I could prepare Ethan’s birthday gift and visit the Mercer estate that
afternoon.
As I approached Alex’s office, I heard his voice through the partially open door.
“It’s done… Yeah, he’s gone… Haha, that guy is nowhere near your level. Don’t worry… Ms. Hart…”
I paused, confused. Alex was on the phone, and his tone sounded uncharacteristically serious.
As he stepped out of his office, he spotted me standing at the door. He visibly startled, nearly dropping his phone.
I instinctively reached out and caught it before it hit the ground. As I handed it back, I couldn’t help but notice the contact name on the screen.
Alex’s face turned pale as he fumbled to take the phone. The call was still ongoing.
He hastily said, “Ms. Hart is here. I’ll call you back later.”
Hanging up, he looked at me with obvious panic in his eyes.
It was just a phone call. Why did he look so flustered?
