Chapter 96: With Purpose
The two of them had set out to get a late–night snack, but in the end, one grabbed a bottle of wine while the other chose a soft drink, settling into a beach chair.
At this hour, Chloe wasn’t really in the mood to eat much, and Daniel felt the same; simply sitting together with her was enough.
“I’m sorry for making that decision on my own. You’re not mad, are you?” Daniel broached the subject once they were seated. Chloe paused slightly, then shook her head.
She wasn’t someone who lacked gratitude. Even though Daniel hadn’t consulted her beforehand, his actions were clearly for her benefit. He could have chosen not to make that call, but he did. Even if it was a performance, he played his role quite well.
No matter his true intentions, Chloe was genuinely grateful.
“You make it sound like I’m someone who wouldn’t appreciate help. Why would I be angry at you for helping me? I owe you my thanks. If you hadn’t intervened, who knows how long it would take to resolve this issue. I can see their attitudes clearly, and the way they handled everything seems calculated. I suspect this isn’t the first time something like this has happened; otherwise, they wouldn’t be so quick to avoid responsibility.”
As she spoke, Chloe voiced her suspicions. After finishing, she felt she might have said too much since these were just her assumptions without evidence.
But after hearing her words, Daniel nodded.
Chloe made some valid points. He hadn’t considered this perspective before, but upon reflection, it indeed raised some concerns.
“Take this business card. If you encounter any issues down the line, you can contact this number.”
Chloe thanked him again as she accepted the card. It was a lawyer’s card, one she recognized as a top attorney who had represented Daniel’s family for many years. She never expected someone so skilled would be involved in her case.
“Thank you so much,” she said more sincerely this time. Daniel’s family had a formidable legal team that rarely lost cases in the country. Their involvement would save her a lot of
trouble.
Looking at the situation now, it was clear this was no longer just about resolving a simple issue. Money alone wouldn’t suffice; power was also at play.
Daniel chuckled helplessly, saying directly, “You don’t need to be so formal with me. Besides, you should know I’m a businessman, and the nature of business is all about benifit. I’ve done all this not just out of charity; even charity has its motives. My intention in helping you is

quite clear–if it were anyone else, I wouldn’t have done this.”
Hearing this, Chloe instinctively avoided his gaze, staring out at the distant sea. “The sea breeze tonight is really gentle.”

“Did you not hear what I just said? Should I repeat it so you won’t have to keep thanking me?” Daniel teased, showing no signs of letting up. Chloe found it a bit absurd; was he really going to say that again when she had already made her gratitude clear?
In the villa, Layla was applying a face mask in front of the mirror. She had used masks before, but never ones this expensive. Now she realized that you get what you pay for.
In the past, she felt no benefit from the cheaper masks; now she understood that the quality truly made a difference.
All the luxury face serums and products she once couldn’t afford were now readily available to
her.
With the male lead’s secondary card in her possession, she could swipe without him questioning it.
After using these products, she felt her skin was better than ever.
Julian was in the room working, and Layla’s phone kept vibrating beside her, becoming quite
annoying.
“Layla, your phone is ringing. Come answer it.”
“It’s not important. Just hang it up. I’m tired of getting calls all day!” Layla’s voice came from the bathroom.
Julian paused, glancing at the screen. It was a call from one of her teachers.
“It’s your teacher calling.”
“I know. He’s just checking on my absence. I asked for leave, and he didn’t agree, so here I am. I don’t get why he has to call me every day about it.”
Layla’s tone was particularly impatient. Hearing this, Julian fell silent. So she hadn’t gotten the school’s approval for her leave?
“Well, it doesn’t matter now. I’m already here, so I’ll just go ahead regardless.”
Julian felt even less inclined to respond. He suddenly couldn’t focus on his work anymore, stood up, and said, “I’m going for a walk.”
After saying that, he headed out. Layla sensed something was off and rushed out, but before she could say anything, she heard the door close behind him.
She stomped her foot, frustrated that he hadn’t even listened to her before leaving.
Outside, Julian couldn’t help but think of Chloe. He remembered how they would try to find

time for dates during college, but Chloe always ended up answering calls.
Whenever they met, he would set aside his tasks to be fully present with her, but Chloe could
never do the same.
She was always getting calls, whether about papers or school issues–there was always something. Most of the callers were either classmates or professors.
There was a time when he was extremely annoyed by this, and they had a big fight over it, but Chloe’s calm demeanor had been somewhat intimidating.
She had said that it was her responsibility.
If she was getting calls, she had to address them; she couldn’t hold up everyone else’s progress because of her own issues.
He had once asked her if it didn’t bother her. Chloe had looked at him with confusion. “Why would I be annoyed by something I did wrong? It’s not someone else’s fault.”
