Chapter 52
“Aron is the only survivor of the Quinn family. Caleb spoke coldly, his eyes startling.
“Yes” replied David.
David was genuinely shocked that someone from the long-gone Quinn family popped up in Glovia again after vanishing overnight years back.
He added, “A month ago, I had someone go to Irinland to look into Aron. At that time, he was in Glovia.”
Caleb frowned lightly, “One month ago? Well, Mr. Thomas, Are you suggesting the kidnapping from a month ago?”
Wearing a smug grin, David leaned in. “Crazy coincidence, don’t you think, Caleb? The minute Aron shows up, two ladies: close to you just happen to get snatched.”
“Huh, don’t you understand, Mr. Thomas?” Caleb looked coldly at David.
He knew already from Colin; David’s people had been spotted poking around in Romaine, sniffing out Aron and more, Caleb might not be ready to take on the Thomas family just yet, but he wasn’t about to ignore their little stunt. The kidnapping stank of their handiwork.
But using explosives? That wasn’t Thomas’ style-not when they couldn’t afford a full-blown war with the Mercer family. Neither family would win if it came to that, and the Thomases knew it.
Catching the change in the air, David feigned fear. Look, Caleb, I’ve known you since you were a kid Hurt you? That’s the last thing I’d do. I was just… helping you weed out the fakes. You’ve got a lot of sharp cookies in your jar, don’t you!”
His face settled into a mask of ambiguity, betraying nothing, but the glint in his eyes suggested he was anticipating some kind of spectacle.
Caleb frowned, “What do you mean?”
Just then, a cell phone ringtone sounded. Caleb glanced at it with a frown. It was Ava. A sudden irritation rose in his heart, so he hung up the phone directly
But Ava was persistent, calling back immediately. Caleb, now visibly irritated, dismissed the call again. His eyes narrowed as he pondered if David’s cryptic words held a deeper meaning, stirring up frustration within him.
David, however, said nothing more. He got to his feet, stretching and stilling a yawn. I’m not as young as I once was, and I’ve got no business meddling in youth affairs. I’ll be on my way.”
David really swaggered out, and Colin came in immediately, helplessly handing his phone to Caleb.
Colin asked, “Mr. Mercer, Ms. Davenport’s asking if you’re free to hang out now?”
Caleb stayed silent, his impatience written all over his face. Reading the room. Colin slipped his phone away and slowly retreated, giving Caleb some space.
David had barely slid into his car when something caught his eye. Across the street, through the restaurant window, he saw Aron and Evelyn, cozy as can be, sharing laughs over their meal is interest piqued, he snapped a photo with his phone and texted it to Caleb, smirking at the thought of Caleb’s reaction.
And react Caleb did-in pure fury. He felt like storming right over to that restaurant, but he wrestled with his anger. Why should he care about Ava, of all people?
Caleb’s grip on his phone turned white-knuckle tight as a memory hit him. Shaking it off, he grabbed his keys and tossed a casual order to Colin to give him a shout if anything came up, then he took off, leaving Colin blinking in surprise. This had
