She had stepped into his life so suddenly–he needed something to keep her close, something that would make her stay.
But now, it felt like that kind of tie wasn’t necessary anymore.
“That was then. Things have changed,” he said seriously after clearing his throat. “Don’t stress about the money. Just buy whatever you want.”
Charmaine shrugged. “It’s fine, I can afford this.”
She opened the box. Even in the low light of the car, the necklace–lined with pearls and sparkling gems— was stunning.
She picked it up and handed it to him. “When I visited Mrs. Sylvia’s place last time, she was kind to me. I wanted to give her this as a New Year’s gift. What do you think?”
Emyr looked surprised at first, then thoughtful. “I thought you bought it to compete with Leah.”
Charmaine paused, then her eyes widened. “Wait… you were VIP Bidder 1?”
“Yeah, that was me.”
“No way! I was wondering why someone else kept raising the bid. You thought I wanted it, so you tried to win it for me?”
“That’s what I thought at first. But then I figured out your plan.”
Charmaine let out a sigh of relief and patted her chest. “Thank goodness you caught on, or I almost made you lose money for nothing!”
Something warm stirred in Emyr’s chest when she cared for him.
He looked over the necklace again and nodded. “It’s lovely. Aunty Sylvia will love it.”
“Right? I thought of her as soon as I saw it. The ruby looks classy, and the pearl adds that luxurious touch. They balance each other out so nicely.”
Charmaine gently closed the box and passed it to him. “Give this to Mrs. Sylvia for me and wish her a Happy New Year.”
“You should give it to her yourself. It’ll feel more personal, and …”
“And what?”
“And… I haven’t told her we’re dating yet.”
Charmaine, who wasn’t great at handling people, instantly panicked. “Wait, what? Are we telling her now?

“Hello, Aunty Sylvia,” Emyr greeted softly, then motioned toward Charmaine.
Charmaine had no choice but to move into the frame. Her ears turned red, and she fumbled for words. “Happy New Year, Mrs. Sylvia.”
The moment Sylvia saw her, she broke into a big smile. “Charmaine? Oh, I’m so happy to see you both together! Are you two out enjoying yourselves?”
Charmaine’s blush deepened.
Emyr noticed that, and his smile grew just a little.
“Aunty Sylvia, the company’s annual event is in Sudbay. She came with me–as my family.”
Charmaine was stunned speechless.
He just told her like that?
“F–family?” Sylvia looked surprised for a second, then her eyes lit up with joy.
“You two are a couple now? Really, Charmaine?”
Charmaine took a deep breath and nodded firmly. “Yes, Mrs. Sylvia. We’re together.”
“That’s great!”
Sylvia was thrilled, tears brimming in her eyes. “I knew Emyr meant something special to you. I’m so happy you feel the same way!”
She looked like she was about to laugh and cry at the same time.
Charmaine, unsure how to handle the emotional reaction, held out the box with the necklace. “Mrs. Sylvia, I got this for you as a New Year’s gift. I hope you like it. I’ll send it over tomorrow.”
“You thoughtful girl! Getting me a gift? It should be me buying one for you!”
Sylvia could tell Charmaine meant it, so she accepted the gift with a smile. “Come visit when you can. I’ll take you shopping for things you like.”
Charmaine nodded sweetly. “Okay, thank you, Mrs. Sylvia.”
Emyr gently placed his arm around her. “Aunty Sylvia, we’re heading back to the hotel. Let’s catch up another time.”
