But his deeply lined face was still filled with hope.
Charmaine took a deep breath. “Alright, I promise. I’ll say at the clinic until the end of the year.”
Ingram couldn’t contain his joy. He grabbed Charmaine’s hands in excitement. “Sure! Dr. Robin, thank you
so much!”
“I should be the one thanking you. Beacon Hospital trusted me enough to let me practice here.”
For someone like her, who had no real experience and only a reputation in name, being treated like a chief physician was already an exceptional privilege.
I’ll let Mr. Zimmer know so he can adjust the duty roster.”
“Alright, I’ll leave that to you.”
After sending Ingram off, Charmaine thought for a moment before calling Basil.
The call was picked up almost immediately as if he had been waiting for it.

Basil chuckled on the other end. “You agreed to Ingram’s request, didn’t you? I knew you’d give in–you’ve always had a soft heart.”
He let out a helpless sigh. “I didn’t have a choice either. Ingram came to me in the middle of the night, sighing and worrying that if you left, the holistic medicine department–after just two days of liveliness- would go back to being deserted.
“He wouldn’t stop pestering me, so I had no choice but to send him to beg you instead.”
After a pause, Basil asked, “Are you mad at me?”
Charmaine pouted. “I wouldn’t dare.”

Charmaine couldn’t help but laugh. Remembering Ingram’s carnest expression just now, she pursed her lips before speaking softly, “To be honest, I’ve benefited from this too. You taught me everything I know, but I haven’t done anything to carry it forward. In that sense, I guess I’ve failed too.”
Hearing the trace of self–doubt in her voice, Basil immediately grew concerned. “Nonsense. You’re my only apprentice–if you’re not good enough, then what does that make all those others I dismissed?
“Besides, don’t think of it that way. The reason I taught you was, first, because you had talent, and second, because you clicked with me. I practically forced you to study under me for so long–honestly, the fact that you didn’t end up completely hating it is already enough to satisfy me.”
For once, Basil sounded serious. “At the end of the day, the path you take is your choice. I only gave you an option–you decide whether to follow it or not. No matter what you choose, I’ll always support you.”
His words struck a chord in Charmaine’s heart. A warmth spread quietly within her.
In both of her lives, she had never truly known what she wanted.
In her past life, she had only wanted love and approval. She followed her family’s wishes, did everything they wanted, and never had a thought of her own.
In this life, she had a purpose–to survive. But beyond that, everything had been about revenge.
