Fortunately, this was on the ground floor. The window ledge below had a small platform where the kittens huddled together in a foam box, keeping warm.
Charmaine hurriedly ordered some goat milk powder and cat food online, hoping to feed the kittens before their mother returned.
Several hours passed, and the mother cat still hadn’t come back. Worried, Charmaine set up a small camera outside the window, connecting it to an extension cord. This way, she could monitor both the kittens and the office.
By the time she finished, dusk had settled in.
Charmaine gently stroked the soft heads of the kittens, feeling a warmth spread from her hands to her heart.
“I’m leaving now. Be good and wait for your mother to come back.”
“Meow…
The kittens meowed softly, as if replying to her.
So adorable!
Charmaine reached out to pet them a few more times, resisting the urge to take them home. They were better off waiting for their mother.
She stroked the chin of the kitten with a tiny orange spot on its nose, turned off the office light, and headed out for the dinner gathering.
The dinner was at a lakeside restaurant opposite Beacon Hospital. The restaurant overlooked a large artificial lake, juxtaposing the warm, lively dining atmosphere with the somber reality of the Beacon In- Patient Department across the water.
The crew had booked the entire place. Charmaine showed her ID and was led by a waiter inside.
Several tables in the main hall were occupied by crew members, identified by the tools and equipment they carried–props, cameras, makeup kits, and more.
Walking through a glass corridor, the waiter knocked on the door of a private room. “Ms. Nelson, this way, please.”
Charmaine murmured a thank you and stepped inside Heads turned to look at her as she entered, about 30 people in all.
Among them, she spotted Leah and Zayn at the left–hand table. Both appeared visibly shocked to see her.
Ignoring then, Charmaine’s gaze swept the room and het Basil’s eyes across the way, where he sat at the head of the right–hand table, clearly the guest of honor
Basil glanced at her briefly before turning away, continuing to crack sunflower seeds as if he didn’t recognize her.

Paxton, seated two places away from Basil, waved her over. “There’s a spot here.”
“Okay.”
Charmaine walked over and took the seat next to Paxton.
Basil glanced over, and she heard a low, disdainful snort from him. She almost burst out laughing.
Such a petty old man.
From across the room, Leah watched, her hands clenched tightly under the table.
Beside her, Zayn scowled. “What is she doing here?”
Though Charmaine was technically part of the crew, only senior Beacon Hospital doctors and top management were at this dinner. Not to mention, Basil, the CEO from the White family–the largest investor–was present, along with representatives from several other investment groups.
What gave Charmaine the right to sit with them?
Zayn, who usually ignored his wayward sister, had grown to detest her cold detachment after Milo’s accident. Today’s events only cemented his loathing.
To him, Charmaine was indifferent, arrogant, self–serving–a social climber!
He couldn’t comprehend Milo’s previous efforts to protect such a worthless woman. What spell had she cast over him?
Leah, unaware of Zayn’s deeper grievances, murmured in frustration, “First, Mr. Zimmer defends Chara earlier today, and now he invites her to sit beside him
”
Mid–sentence, Leah gasped as a realization struck her. Covering her mouth, she couldn’t hide her shock and disappointment. “Could Chara have done something inappropriate? Mrs. Zimmer and our mother are close friends…”
A female doctor nearby, catching snippets of gossip, leaned in with wide–eyed curiosity. “Are you talking about the girl sitting next to Mr. Zimmer? Who is she? thought she was a family member or something. Are you saying-?”
Leah waved her hands in a panic, shaking her head vehemently, both vilifying and defending Charmaine. “No, no, maybe I’m overthinking it. Chara would never do something like that. She’s currently in a happy relationship with Mr. Emyr …
