Paxton closed the door, then turned around with an apologetic face. “I’m sorry, Professor Robin, for the trouble.”
Charmaine picked up the two kittens, cradling them in her hands. They were so small, with soft, fluffy fur.
She nodded gratefully at Paxton. “I’m the one who should apologize. It’s just a small matter and you got dragged into it.”
“Nonsense. This office has always been reserved for you by the hospital. It’s usually unused and gets cleaned regularly. With the cold weather, I guess the stray cats found the warmth here and made it their nesting spot.”
Looking around the office, covered in tiny paw prints and with a makeshift nest made from printouts, it was clear the cats had been here for a while.
Seeing Charmaine’s obvious joy while looking at the kittens, Paxton couldn’t help but smile. “I didn’t realize Professor Robin had a soft spot for animals. Why not take them home?”
Charmaine shook her head. “They have a mother somewhere. It’s best not to take them away. She’ll probably come back for them soon.”
Paxton nodded. “That makes sense.”
“Don’t worry about it. I’ll handle things here. You should get back to your work, Mr. Zimmer.”
“Alright, I’ll check the other areas then. By the way, there’s a new investor joining today. We’re having a dinner gathering tonight. You should come too.”
Seeing Charmaine about to decline, Paxton quickly added, “Master Field will also be there. It’s just a casual dinner for everyone to get acquainted. You can come without worry; no one will know your true identity.”
“In that case, I’ll humbly accept. Thank you, Mr. Zimmer.”
After Paxton left, Charmaine made a small nest for the kittens and placed it on the windowsill outside.
