Marshall didn’t bother to respond to him.
Ashley kept silent.
Unfazed by their indifference, Chase noticed Ashley’s tea was almost gone and poured more tea for her and Marshall.
Whether it was during tea time or lunch, Ashley only talked with Marshall and Sam. Chase kept to himself and didn’t start a conversation, either. Honestly, nobody could figure out exactly who was ghosting who between those two.
Around 2:30 pm, as they prepared to leave, Ashley suddenly remembered that she and Chase had been together for nearly four hours, yet hadn’t exchanged a single word…
Marshall had noticed this as well. But he knew Chase never liked Ashley, and Ashley had already moved on. Besides, he had them come today not to reconcile them. Since they had nothing to say to each other, he would just let it go.
Sam looked up at Ashley.“Mom, are you going home today?” Before Ashley could answer, he continued, “You haven’t been home for a long time.”
Hearing this, Marshall paused, sighing subtly. Chase remained silent.
Ashley touched his face. “I’m sorry. I still have work to do.”
“Oh…” Sam was disappointed.“Are you going to Great–Grandma’s house later or going on another business trip? I couldn’t reach you before, so I went to Great–Grandma’s house, but you weren’t there. She said you were on a business trip…”
Ashley didn’t know that Sam had gone to the Jones residence last weekend. She did plan to go there later to have dinner with Amanda. Thinking about those missed calls, and how Sam had gone to Amanda’s place to look for her, Ashley said, “I’ll go to your Great–Grandma’s place later. Do you want to come with me?”
“Yes!”
Sam became a little happier. Finally his mother had time for him.
Ashley looked at Chase, who understood her meaning and said to Sam, “So, you’ll be staying at your Great–Grandma’s place tonight?”
“Mm!”
“Okay,” Chase agreed. “Then Dad will have someone pick you up from school tomorrow afternoon.”
“No, I’m going back to Great–Grandma’s house after school tomorrow.”
Chase smiled, glanced at Ashley, and said, “You have to discuss that with your mother. It’s up to her.”
Sam hugged Ashley’s leg, looking up at her.“Mom, will you leave Great–Grandma’s house tomorrow?”
“Yes.”
“…Okay.”
After making their arrangements, they talked to Marshall for a while before driving away.
The next day, after Ashley drove Sam to school, she went to Eternal for work. Entering the company, she once again encountered Chase and his secretary in the elevator.
The three of them stood in the elevator. Just like the last time, they acted like strangers, exchanging no words.
That morning, Chase left Eternal around 11 am. After he left, Tim learned of Ashley’s return and went to her office.
As their conversation was winding down, Ashley recalled encountering Chase at the company again. She asked, “Has the collaboration with Sterling Corp not been finalized yet?”
“It’s settled, but there were some issues regarding the division of responsibilities. His visit today was to negotiate additional clauses.”
