As she turned for what felt like the hundredth time, the man beside her suddenly seized her wrist and yanked her closer.
Charmaine gasped, her entire body going rigid. “Emyr, what do you think you’re doing?”
The only light in the room came from a dim bedside lamp, casting a soft golden hue over the man’s strikingly handsome face.
His grip on her arm tightened, drawing them even closer until barely any space remained between them.
“You’ve been waiting all night for this, haven’t you?”
Charmaine’s eyes widened, her palms pressing against his chest.
As his bathrobe slipped slightly from the movement, her hand unintentionally landed on the tattoo on his chest. The heat radiating from his body and the powerful rhythm of his heartbeat were impossible to ignore.
“Who… who’s been waiting?!”
“Hmm… Acting coy now?”
Emyr reached for something in the bedside drawer and pulled out two items. “You thought you could stash. these under the pillow without me noticing?”
“What… what are those?”
Charmaine picked one up, and the moment she recognized it, she nearly fainted.
A conception planning kit, along with a pocket–sized guide on marital intimacy. The illustrations inside made her face flush instantly, and she slammed the book shut.
Emyr wore an expression of absolute certainty, as if he held irrefutable proof. “Do you still want to deny it?”
“1… I really wish I could refute this. No, wait! This has nothing to do with me. I wasn’t the one who set this up!”
Charmaine stumbled over her words, desperately trying to distance herself from the situation. She even went as far as explaining the rose petals and the nightgown to Emyr.
Emyr glanced at the pajamas she had just changed out of, still clutched in her hand. His brows drew together slightly. “It wasn’t you?”
“I swear, I had nothing to do with this! How could I have expected them to be this audacious?”
Though Emyr didn’t say anything, his expression remained grim, making it clear he wasn’t pleased.
Hoping to show where her loyalties lay, Charmaine quickly assured him, “Mr. Emyr, we’re on the same side. They really crossed a line!”
Emyr shot her a cold look. “Who said we’re on the same side?”
His gaze carried an unmistakable sense of bitterness.

Charmaine was taken aback, unsure of what she had said to upset him this time.
After mulling it over briefly, she decided there was no point in arguing further. With a sigh, she sat down on the bed.
“Even if you’re looking to satisfy that… urge, there’s no reason for me to move in, right?”
Emyr narrowed his eyes at her. “What are you implying?”
“It is what it is. I owe you a favor, so I’m making it up to you. When you want something, we can discuss it again. There’s no need for us to live together. Won’t that only make people misunderstand our relationship
even more?”
She hesitated for a moment before adding, “Besides, didn’t you finally find the woman you’ve been searching for? If she discovers that we’re sharing a room, wouldn’t that just upset her?”
Emyr fixed his gaze on her with intensity.
In the dim glow, his eyes appeared deep and unreadable, making it impossible to tell what he was truly feeling.
“Hah.” A faint laugh escaped his lips, carrying a biting chill. “You’re still worrying about me?”
“I don’t like unnecessary trouble. I think we’re quite alike,” Charmaine responded.
“How absurd. Since when do I need a maid like you to make decisions on my behalf?” Emyr retorted.
His voice suddenly dropped to an icy tone. “And besides, my business has nothing to do with you!”
Charmaine was startled by his abrupt anger, her eyes widening instinctively as she stared at him, unsure of how to react
Without meeting her gaze, he turned away indifferently. “If you’re not planning to sleep, then go stand in the hallway.”
Ugh, Satan was in a foul mood again for no reason.
Not wanting to be banished to the corridor, Charmaine pouted, pulled up the blanket, and lay back down.
A strange feeling lingered in her chest–something bitter, something suffocating.
But why should she even feel upset? Emyr was right.
She had no right to meddle in his matters.
Charmaine wasn’t one to dwell on emotions for long. Before long, she drifted into a deep sleep.
Emyr, with his back turned, remained composed, quietly listening to the sounds behind him..
As arrogant as he was, he fully expected Charmaine to do what she always did–come over, soothe his temper, apologize, and he would begrudgingly accept it.
Yet, he held this position for a long time. His arm grew numb, but there was no sign of her approaching.
Frustration flickered across his face, and when he finally turned around, he was met with the sight of her curled up. fast asleep, facing him.
