A moment later, Chase answered Sam’s call. “School’s out?”
“Mm–hmm…”
“Wanna see your mom?”
“Mm–hmm…”
“Did you call her?”
“No…”
Chase chuckled.“Call her. She should have time to the phone today.”
Sam’s eyes lit up.“Really?”
“Yeah.”
“Okay!”
After hanging up, Sam quickly called Ashley.

Ashley paused when she saw the incoming call. She had promised to meet Sam once a month, but that time she played nurse when Sam was hospitalized, plus that meeting at Mr. Cook’s place shouldn’t count. So, it had been over a month since she last saw Sam. Thinking this, Ashley answered.“Sam…”
Before she could finish, Sam exclaimed, “Mommy!” His voice was full of joy.
Ashley froze, her hand hovering over the mouse. After two seconds, she came to her senses and softly said, “Yes, school’s out?” “Yup!” Sam happily said, “Mommy, where are you? I wanted to call earlier, but I was afraid I’d disth you. Then Dad told me you’d definitely have time to answer my call, so… Mommy, are you coming home?”
“No…”
Ashley paused. “I’m still at the office. I’ll be at your great–grandmother’s house later. Do you want “Wherever you go, I go!”

“Okay.” Ashley added, “Go to your great–grandmother’s first. Mommy will be there later.”
“Okay!”

Ashley left the office and went to Amanda’s after finishing her work. Before she even entered the house, Sam heard the car and ran out, throwing himself into her arms.“Mommy!”
“Mm–hmm,” Ashley hugged him. Amanda saw her and smiled.“Dinner’s ready. Come in.”
“Okay.”
Sam sat next to Ashley at dinner. Then, he found that tt had been a while since his mom had cooked for him.
He said to Ashley, “Mommy, I miss your cooking! Can you cook for me tomorrow? I want ribs, pan–fried fish, and meat soup.”
Ashley had seldom cooked since she decided to get a divorce. On one hand, she no longer had to be a good wife or mother. On the other hand, she was too busy.
Thinking about this, she agreed.“Okay.”
Most people weren’t really interested in Tanya’s story. So, the fact that Tanya and Sam had a close relationship hadn’t reached Amanda or Steve. However, before Sam returned, they had anticipated a close bond between him and Tanya. They were naturally uncomfortable with that, but they also understood that Sam was too know to tell right from wrong. They couldn’t blame him for not understanding adult stuff.
Ashley lost custody of Sam, so Amanda and Steve had been worried that prolonged separation would strain their mother–son bond. Seeing Sam so attached to Ashley, they were relieved.
