“Are you trying to butter me up now? Isn’t it a bit late for that?”

Charmaine draped the napkin over him and replied with a cheerful smile, “Mr. Emyr, you’re being unfair. I’ve been diligently serving you every single day”
“Heh, diligently serving me by talking back, feeding me weird stuff, and trying to annoy me to death?”
Some people’s memories are just too good–it seemed they could hold grudges forever.
Charmaine raised her hand solemnly as if swearing an oath. “That was when I was new here and didn’t know. Mr. Emyr very well. Things are different now.”
Emyr arched an eyebrow and a rare smirk played on his otherwise stern face. “How are you different now?”
Charmaine’s face lit up, her expressions vivid and animated. “Well, I’ve at least helped you survive a critical night. I’m practically your future hero, destined to help cure your leg. Doesn’t that mean my status has improved by leaps and bounds?”
Emyr’s lips twitched as he stared at her smug expression. “You really know how to flatter yourself.”
Before Charmaine could respond, a loud voice boomed from the doorway.
“Ah, so this is why I had a feeling today was a good day to come home–look at this feast waiting for me!”
Kane’s voice announced his arrival before he appeared at the dining table.
Without hesitation, he grabbed his cutlery and was ready to dig in.
Just as his fork reached the food, Emyr smacked his hand.
“Ouch!”
Emyr’s tone was sharp. “Did I say you could eat?”
Kane rubbed his hand and pleaded with puppy eyes. “Come on, Emyr. It’s been ages since I came home. At least let me have a bite.”
Ignoring him, Emyr continued his meal leisurely.
Alfred stepped forward and smiled kindly. “Mr. Kane, all these dishes were prepared by Ms. Nelson. If you’d like to eat, perhaps you should wait for the kitchen to prepare something for you.”
Kane’s eyes lit up. “Wow, so Emyr and Charmaine are this close now? Cool!”
As if struck by inspiration, he added, “In that case, why don’t you bring Charmaine to Mrs. Alessa’s birthday banquet next week?”
Before Emyr could respond, Charmaine quickly interjected, “I’m not going.”
Emyr cast her a deep, unreadable glance.
Kane assumed she was just shy. “Oh, come on, Charmaine, you should go! It’s rare for Emyr to finally show his softer side. Let him show off his wife a little!”

Charmaine rolled her eyes and was about to retort when Emyr’s low voice interrupted her. “Sure”
What?
Before she could protest, his cold voice sealed the deal. “You’re going too. In exchange for a cake.
Charmaine gritted her teeth. “Fine!”

Clueless about the “cake incident,” Kane chuckled mischievously, stroking his chin. “Wow, Emyr really is warming up. He’s even playing with food now.”
Charmaine was speechless.
Sometimes it is better if this troublemaker just stays away.
The birthday banquet for Alessa was held at Eragos‘ seven–star luxury hotel. The main road leading to the venue was clogged with a parade of high–end cars.
As one of Eragos‘ rising powerhouses, the Quinns naturally attracted a gathering of top–tier elites to the
event.
Since Emyr had a last–minute meeting at the company earlier that day, Charmaine had no choice but to head to the banquet alone first.
The traffic jam left her car stuck not far from the venue, so Charmaine got out and walked the rest of the
way.
She had only taken a few steps when her phone buzzed with a message from Daniel, asking if she had arrived and offering to pick her up.
Charmaine didn’t bother to reply.
While the luxury cars remained stuck in traffic, Charmaine quickly made her way to the hotel entrance.
Meanwhile, inside a Mercedes–Benz still stuck in the parking lot queue, Celeste suddenly grabbed Leah’s arm, fuming. “Isn’t that Charmaine? Didn’t she say she wasn’t coming? How shameless can she be?”
Leah’s sharp eyes trailed Charmaine as she passed effortlessly through the banquet entrance. Her beautifully made–up eyes narrowed slightly.
She turned suddenly to Celeste and Veronica, her voice soft and concerned. “Celeste, Veronica, I’m worried my sister might do something reckless. If she causes trouble and embarrasses Mrs. Alessa, could you help me out?”
The Quinns had risen to prominence in recent years thanks to breakthroughs in electric car battery technology. Before that, they had been a stable middle–class family, producing automotive chips.
Their success today was largely credited to Alessa, who decades ago had led the family’s pivot from an auto repair business to chip manufacturing. In recent years, she had also spearheaded research into advanced battery technologies.
Beyond her business achievements, Alessa had established a senior care fund, dedicating herself to improving healthcare and retirement issues for the elderly. Her efforts had even earned her national recognition.
