Chapter 127
This was the second time Ashton had caught me in an awkward moment.

The first time, I’d stumbled upon him half–naked, wrapped only in a towel. This time, he’d overheard me thirsting over him.
I couldn’t help but suspect he’d opened the door on purpose. Why else would he wait so long, only to open it right when I was saying something embarrassing?
At that critical moment, the only way to salvage my dignity was to act drunk. If I pretended to have no recollection of the incident, I could save myself from this mortification.
“Look, Nora! He’s right here!” I exclaimed, feigning ignorance of my previous comment and pointing at Ashton as if nothing had happened.
Nora gave an awkward smile before looking at him. “She’s drunk.”
“I’m not drunk!” I countered, playing the part. After all, no drunk person ever admits they’re drunk.
Nora, however, pinched me in the waist and teased, “Oh, right. You’ve only had one glass of wine. How drunk could you possibly be?”
Betrayed. That was how I felt. Who else but my best friend would know the perfect moment to sell me
out?
I struggled to meet Ashton’s gaze, yet he stood there, staring at me with an expression I couldn’t read. “What did you need me for?” he asked calmly.
“N–Nothing,” I stammered, turning around to lead Nora into my apartment.
“I’m looking for you, though,” Ashton’s voice rang out behind me.
My heart skipped a beat. At that moment, I wanted the ground to swallow me whole. “I’m dizzy. Let’s talk tomorrow,” I blurted out and swiftly retreated into my home without giving him a chance to respond.
Once the door closed, Nora burst out laughing.
I glared at her, my face flushed with embarrassment.
“You can’t even own up to your actions! Now that he knows how you feel, you might as well get him into bed. Who cares about Tom, Dick, or Harry after that?” she teased.
Frustrated, I pushed her toward the door. “Leave. This is the last day of our friendship!”
“We’ll celebrate with champagne the day you finally sleep with him, alright?” she said, still laughing.
Despite her teasing, I knew Nora genuinely wanted Ashton and me to be together.
After she left, my face remained hot from the lingering embarrassment. I kept hearing noises from Ashton’s apartment and feared he might come knocking on my door.
The truth was, I had wanted to talk to Ashton. I wanted to ask him about the punks and his investigation into his father’s accident. But now, I was too embarrassed to face him.
Eventually, I collapsed on the couch and fell asleep, though my emotions remained unsettled.
I woke up at around 5:00 a.m. to the sound of the door across the hall closing. I quickly deduced

Ashton had either gone for a jog or left for the day.
Running to my window, I saw him outside with a backpack, riding away on his bicycle.
Did he cycle such long distances every day? This was the first time I’d noticed it.
Still, I breathed a sigh of relief that he had left. At least I wouldn’t have to worry about bumping into him and reliving the awkwardness of the previous night.
At noon, I had just finished my work at the office and was ready to investigate our mysterious boss when Nora called.
Recalling the way she had teased me last night, I gritted my teeth and answered sarcastically, “Hey, Dr. Bennett…”
Before I could say more, Nora interrupted me, her tone urgent. “Elaine, Selene just came into the hospital for an abortion. What the heck happened?”
Her words hit me like a bolt of lightning. I immediately tensed up, recalling my conversation with Selene at the café.
“Has she gone through with it?” I asked.
