Oh? I had never thought about that.
The answer was probably a no. After all, I had rarely kissed anyone in my life. Even with Logan–the man I had once loved–I only ever stole soft kisses when he was sick or drunkenly asleep. And even
those were on his cheeks or the back of his hands.
Yet, the kiss Ashton and I shared earlier was on the lips, which had rarely, if ever, happened with Logan.
Logan had only kissed me on my cheeks and forehead, never my lips. I vividly remembered the one time I had asked him why. “We’ve known each other for too long, Elaine. I can’t kiss you on the lips,” he
had said.
The truth was simple–he didn’t love me.
Some said that when a couple kissed, something magical happened–their tongues intertwined, dopamine was released, and the feeling became irresistible. If one could resist the other, then love wasn’t there.
“I don’t care about the what–ifs,” I replied to Ashton, trying to sound indifferent.
His jaw tightened, and I noticed his Adam’s apple bobbing as he swallowed hard. “But I want to know,” he said, his voice resolute. His intense gaze bore into mine, and for the first time, I felt cornered.
The pressure made me nervous, so I tried to deflect, jokingly teasing him. “Wait, don’t tell me that was your first kiss. Is that why it’s bothering you so much?”
“Yes!” His resolute answer froze the smile on my face.
I blinked, unable to process what he had just said. Seconds later, I heard myself say something that sounded more like what a playboy would say: “Let me make it up to you.”
“And how will you do that?” Ashton asked quickly, his voice filled with intrigue.
The tables had turned. I was supposed to dominate this conversation, but somehow, I found myself following his lead instead.
Of course, I knew what he wanted–but I had no intention of giving it to him.
Pursing my lips, I came up with the best way to reject him effectively. “Ashton, we’ve talked about this. We’re only putting on a show, and that includes all our physical interactions. If you can’t be professional about it, I’ll have no choice but to find someone else.“.
“You’re going to swap me out like you swap your outfits?” Ashton’s tone turned icy, his words cutting deep.
I forced a faint smile, acting nonchalant. “I don’t want to, but given your attitude, you leave me no
choice.”
He didn’t respond, but the coldness radiating from him was unmistakable. It felt as if he wanted to freeze me solid in place,
I braved the chilling atmosphere and jabbed at his sore spot. “I understand you’re an innocent guy. Now that I think about it, I did take advantage of you during this arrangement–holding your hands, hugging you, kissing you. So, let’s end this here. Our pretend relationship is over.”

With that, I shoved him back and climbed into the car.
Through the window, I looked at him one last time. “Aren’t you coming?”
He remained silent, his expression unreadable.

Shrugging, I rolled up the window and pressed down on the accelerator, leaving him standing there.
As the car moved forward, I glanced in the rearview mirror. Ashton was still standing beneath the dark sky, motionless. His lonely figure looked as if the world had truly abandoned him.
For a moment, guilt gnawed at me.
I wasn’t sure whether Ashton would return to his rental across from my place, but I knew I didn’t want to go back there just yet.
I called Nora, but she didn’t pick up. She was probably busy in the operating room again.
With no other options, I sighed and decided to return home.
When I arrived at my apartment, I glanced up at Ashton’s windows before getting out of the car.
The lights were off. He hadn’t returned.
I had no idea where he might have gone, and the thought weighed on me heavier than I expected. Sighing deeply, I stepped out of the car and headed upstairs.
As I reached the hallway outside my apartment, I froze.
Someone was standing in the dark.
My mind immediately flashed back to my blind date–the one who had stalked me.
Fear gripped me as I instinctively tensed, and without a second thought, I turned around and fled.
