I felt a flicker of suspicion, but before I could say anything, Alex cleared his throat and forced a smile.
“Ms. Hart, were you eavesdropping? You startled me.”
Although he was clearly joking, I felt the need to clarify. “Please don’t misunderstand, Mr. Hall. I wasn’t eavesdropping. I was just about to knock.”
Alex laughed brightly. “Just kidding. What can I do for you?”
He gestured for me to step into his office.
Although I’d been with the company for several days, it was my first time in his office. My first impression was that it was… unconventional.
The decor was flashy and colorful. The couch was patchwork, with a curved crescent–moon shape. The flowers in the room were vibrant and real–more than just green plants, there were brightly colored blooms everywhere.
Quirky ornaments adorned his desk, and the entire space had a playful, almost feminine vibe. It lacked the seriousness I had expected.
“Do you like it?” Alex asked, noticing my scrutiny.
I forced a polite smile. To be honest, it wasn’t my style. The office felt more like a personal lounge than a workspace.
But it was his office, so his preferences were what mattered.
“Mr. Hall, your
office has a very unique style,” I said diplomatically.
Alex smiled, clearly pleased. “I don’t like dull decor. My second brother always says the same thing.”
He paused, then added with a chuckle, “By the way, the second brother is our big boss. I was talking to him on the phone earlier, and your sudden appearance startled me.”
I chuckled politely, though inwardly, I was turning over his words.
He called the big boss his “second brother,” which implied a close relationship. No wonder Alex could make decisions so freely.
“I’ll make sure it doesn’t happen again,” I said lightly.
Alex waved it off. “No worries. It’s just me being jumpy.”
His approachable and down–to–earth demeanor was refreshing. He lacked the aloofness I’d come to expect from high–ranking executives.
He was nothing like Logan.
When I worked at Mercer Corporation, Logan had been the epitome of professionalism during work hours. Whether in the office or at business meetings, he was always “Mr. Mercer,” and I was just his assistant.
Thinking back, I realized Logan’s behavior wasn’t about fairness or impartiality–it was because he didn’t truly love me.
The thought stung, and I quickly pushed it aside.

“Mr. Hall,” I said, remembering why I’d come. “I’d like to request the afternoon off.”
“Time off?” Alex asked, tilting his head.
“Yes, I have something to take care of,” I explained vaguely.

Alex nodded easily. “Sure, sure. Go ahead. Don’t worry about the clients. I’ve spoken to the big boss, and he said he’d handle it. Just focus on your work and leave the rest to us.”
“Huh?” I was taken aback. I hadn’t even met the big boss, so why was he being so considerate?
Alex laughed. “The big boss is handsome and kind. If you met him, you’d definitely fall for him.”
“Fall for him?” I repeated, startled.
My face reddened slightly, but I quickly realized Alex was just exaggerating. I played along. “Such a great boss must be loved by everyone.”
Alex grinned. “No, no. The big boss doesn’t want everyone to love him. He just wants the person he loves to love him back.”
As I left Alex’s office, his words echoed in my mind.
I found myself wondering what this mysterious big boss was like.
Another strange thing was that the company’s records had no information about him. Could it be that he had something to hide?
Or maybe, like in those over–the–top CEO novels, he kept such a low profile that there were no photos or traces of him anywhere online?
