Tessa and Ethan noticeably tensed at my words. They didn’t look surprised, but the air grew heavy with anticipation.
“Elaine, we already know. It’s not your fault. It’s that rascal Logan‘ fault. I scolded him. I’ll make him come back and apologize to you…” Tessa’s words tumbled out before I could say anything. She was trying to shield me from saying what they didn’t want to hear.
But Ethan, always the more rational one, Interrupted her. “Let Elaine speak.”
Tessa tightened her grip on my hand, her eyes pleading with me.
I lowered my gaze slightly, refusing to let myself be swayed. “Tessa, Ethan, I’ve broken up with Logan.”
The room fell into a deep, suffocating silence. Tessa’s hand clutched mine even tighter, as if trying to prevent me from slipping away.
“Why?” Ethan’s voice was calm but firm, cutting through the quiet,
I knew I had to give them a reason they couldn’t dismiss, one that would make it impossible for them to insist I stay. Otherwise, this would drag on endlessly.
Instead of giving a vague answer like “we’re not suitable,‘ I decided to tell them the truth. “Because of Selene. His care for her has surpassed his care for me, his fiancée.”
Tessa’s grip tightened further as she pulled my hand closer to her. “What did he do with that woman again? Elaine, tell me. I’ll deal with her. Why does she keep clinging to my son?”
Ethan’s face darkened instantly. “Elaine, we aren’t fully aware of what he’s done outside. Tell us, and we’ll stand up for you.”
Not fully aware? Ethan’s words rang hollow.
They must have heard the rumors. Ethan wasn’t the type to ignore such things. Logan might be running Mercer Corporation now, but it was still a company Ethan had built from the ground up. He might have handed over most of the authority, but as chairman, Ethan still held the reins.
Logan consulted him on many matters, and Ethan remained the true master of the house. He might appear detached, but I knew better. He was well–informed and in control.
Logan‘ scandal with Selene was widely talked about in the company. Ethan couldn’t possibly be unaware of it. He was simply pretending to be clueless, waiting for me to confirm it.
If that was the case, I decided to lay it all bare.
“He gave Selene his secondary credit card to use. He let her move into the house meant for me and even bought bed linen she likes. Most importantly, he’s been secretly accompanying her for prenatal check–ups.”
I saw the shock on Tessa’s face. Ethan stayed quiet, his jaw tightening.
The prenatal check–ups were something Nora had told me about. Logan had been careful. He hadn’t set up Selene’s file at Nora’s hospital but at a high–end private hospital in Hilcord.
What Logan didn’t know was that Nora was a special consultant there.
On the day Logan and I were supposed to register our marriage, he had lied about the “auspicious

time” calculated by a fortune–teller. In reality, he had delayed it to accompany Selene for her check–up
Nora had been performing surgery at the private hospital that day and had happened to see him. She hadn’t told me immediately because she thought we had already registered and didn’t want to upset
- me.
When she later heard we hadn’t registered, she still didn’t say anything–trying to avoid rubbing salt into my wounds,
It wasn’t until today, when she found out I was going to meet Logan‘ parents, that she finally told me everything. She wanted me to have one more reason to condemn Logan.
“He did that? That bastard!” Ethan erupted, slamming his palm on the table.
The sound was loud, startling me. Ethan was usually calm and gentle, rarely showing anger. Even though his fury wasn’t directed at me, it was frightening to witness.
