“Ethan, I gave you so many chances, and you didn’t cherish a single one. And honestly? Get rid of that band–it’s kind of creepy”
His whole body stiffened, and his face turned pale.
My gaze shifted to the sleek sports car parked nearby and the tall figure standing beside it, partially hidden by the shadows.
I didn’t know how long he’d been there, leaning slightly forward, watching us.
A smile tugged at my lips. So much for saying he wouldn’t pick me up.

“I know I shouldn’t bother you,” Ethan said, his voice breaking
“But I can’t help it. I miss you so much.”
He lowered his head, tears dripping onto the ground as his body trembled.
I stared at him, but the pity I once felt for him was gone,
All I felt now was irritation.
“I appreciate that you helped me when I was being harassed online. But like I’ve said before–lers part ways and leave it at that.”
Ethan raised his hand, and that’s when I noticed the black elastic band still around his wrist.
It was simple and plain, nothing special.
“You gave me this,” he said softly.
“I’ve worn it ever since.”
I had almost forgotten about that hair tie.
I couldn’t believe he’d kept it all this time.
“Whenever I missed you,” he continued, “I’d hold onto it, pretending you were still here with me.*
I sighed.

I ran toward him, slipping my arm through his without hesitation, grinning up at him.
I didn’t spare a glance at Ethan, who stood frozen behind me, his face dark with despair.
Epilogue
By the sixth year of living abroad, Nathan and I got married.
Life after marriage was blissful.
We explored every nook and cranny of France together, walking hand in hand down cobblestone streets and bustling markets.
Cooking together became one of our favorite things.
Nathan would make my favorite spicy stir–fry, and I’d prepare my signature fish soup for him.
Whenever I got sick with a fever, he’d stay up all night, afraid the sound of the ear thermometer
would wake me.
Instead, he’d gently press his forehead to mine to check my temperature.
“I’m more accurate than any thermometer,” he’d say proudly.
Every year, his birthday wish was the same: “To spend the rest of my life with Holly.”
He loved me deeply, and I loved him just as much.
Together, we had a son and a daughter.
When the kids were three, Nathan’s job brought us back to live in our home country.
One day, while we were out, my daughter pointed across the street.
“Mommy, that man… he’s looking at you,” she said.
I followed her gaze and froze.
It was Ethan.
Our eyes met, and for a moment, he seemed hesitant.
Then, he crossed the street toward us.

He looked worn, a little older than I remembered. “It’s been a long time
“Yes, it has,” I said, nodding politely,
“Are these your children? You and Nathan’s?” he asked, Dancing, at the d
“Mm–hmm.”
“Uncle, do you know my mommy? Do you have kids too? my daughter asked, her voice sweet and
curious.
Ethan paused, looking startled, then crouched down with a soft smile.
“No, Uncle isn’t married, so I don’t have any kids.”
“Why not?” she asked, tilting her head in confusion.
“Hey, don’t be rude! That’s his personal business,” my son said, looking at her with exageration, ke
a little adult.
Ethan chuckled softly and, after a brief silence, said.
“Because Uncle let go of someone very important.”
“Oh,” my daughter replied innocently, not fully understanding-
I walked over and gently took both children by the hand. “Time to go, kids.”
Ethan stood, his expression conflicted. “Well I’ll get going then.”
I nodded. “Take care.”
With that, we turned and walked in opposite directions, growing further and further apart
And just like that, we disappeared from each other’s lives, walking away into different futures.
