Chapter 26: Claire’s POV
Jordan comes back into the room with an apologetic smile.
“I can take you home, Claire. The nurse said you’re free to go home whenever you’re ready.”
“Can you take me to Leo’s to collect my things?” I say silently.
“I can do whatever you need me to. But why didn’t you have Leo take you if you don’t mind me asking?” He says as he sits at my bed side.
“Because I asked for a divorce.“.
“Are you sure, Claire? You just had a traumatic experience and you’ve both lost a child. Is this the best time to make that choice?”
“There was no other choice. I lost our baby.”
“Okay. I won’t question you anymore. Let’s get you out of here.” I help Claire up and bring a wheelchair to her side and assist her in transferring. I bring Claire out of the hospital and help her into the car.
“I can pack your things for you, Claire. You need rest.”
“Thank you, Jordan.” I rest my head back and wait to see Leo’s home from the car window. I silently hoped he wasn’t home. I couldn’t stand to face him after her our talk. He was hurting and although I was hurting too, I didn’t want to cause him more pain.
As we reached the house, I see Leo’s car in the driveway. I get out and walk carefully to the front door. It opens as I am about to press the doorbell with Jordan standing behind me.
“Ms. Claire, what has happened to you?! Come. Come inside.” Elena leads me inside to the living room and sits me down.
“I get Mr. Leo. Hold tight.” I grab her hand with a soft smile.
“It’s okay, Elena. Leo already knows. I’m just here to get my things.” I watch as her face turns from shock to sadness.
“No, Ms. Claire. You are leaving?” She asks in her heavy accent.
“I am.”
“What about the baby?” She whispers.
“The baby didn’t make it.” I start to tear up as Elena hugs me.
“I am so sorry Ms. Claire. I will help get your things.” She locks my arm in hers as she helps me upstairs. I walk slowly with her as Jordan follows closely behind – worried that I might fall and we reach my bedroom. I look at the Leo’s sore as we past what used to be our room.

Chapter 20 CARO POV
- me. I suddenly hear a yell.
“Elenal” It was Charlotte screaming from downstairs.
“Don’t worry. I check on her after.” Elena continues packing.
“Elena!” Charlotte demands.
Just then I hear the bedroom door open as Leo calls out.
“Elena, I think Charlotte needs y-” he stops once he sees me.
“Oh. I hadn’t heard you come in. Charlotte can wait.” He looks down at my suitcases on the floor.
“Claire, do you mind if we talk?” Elena stands beside me and places a hand on my shoulder.
“Ms. Claire is not well. She needs to stay calm and rest.”
“It’s okay, Elena. Thank you.” I place my hand over hers and stand to leave the room with Leo. Jordan watches carefully as we leave.
We walk to his room and I sit on the bed, wincing from pain.
“What did you need to talk about?” I ask quietly.
“I just want to make sure you’re sure about your decision. You can stay here. I don’t mind – I’d rather you stay here.” He was pleading.
“I can’t stay here anymore. It’s just too much for me.” I whisper with my head down.
“What about what you said earlier? Did you mean it?” He wanted me to say I didn’t want a
divorce.
“I know what you want to say, Leo. But I just can’t.” I feel tears again as I keep my head down to avoid his gaze.
“Okay… Here. Don’t sign anything until you’ve had some rest and the chance to read it.” He wanted me to reconsider. He handed me the divorce decree carefully.
“I don’t need to read it. I want nothing. I will take only what I came with. I won’t fight to split any assets or fight for alimony. You can keep everything.” It was worth nothing to me.
“Everything but you.”
“I can give you back your shares as well.”
“No. You deserve those shares.”
“They don’t belong to me,
Leo.”
“They do now.” He holds my hands for a moment.
“I wish you’d stay.”

“I wish I could but things are too far broken.” I say weakly.
“I need to get back to packing my things.” I stand slowly and Leo pulls me into a kiss instinctively.
“Promise me, just promise me one last thing.”
“Okay.” It was the least I could do.
“If you ever regret your decision or have a second–guess, you’ll come back to me?”
“I promise.” I knew what it meant to him and it was the least I could do. I leave the room to see Jordan and Elena packing my things into the car. I turn around and see Leo standing in his bedroom doorway with glossy eyes.
“Goodbye, Leo.” I turn to the stairs and hear the door silently close behind me.
