Alice’s threat, however, did not have the effect she hat imagined

That shit doesn’t work anymore anyway “Massimo growled, causing Alice to calm her temper a little when the realized the pain that was in his voice and that clearly wasn’t just coming from his wounds “I could no longer be here and it would be the same 1 would still be lying in this bed, unable to get up on my own and take care of my own fucking bandages.

“You might think you know something about how I’m feeling, just because you’ve been to a hospital or two, but believe me, Dawsey, you have no idea what it’s like to be trapped in your own body, unable to escape.” He growled, bitterly
“I really do not know. But… I know how to help you.” Alice shrugged her shoulders ruefully So if you can allow me to do just that… I promise I’ll leave.”
“I didn’t remember you being so stubborn. If I had been warned of this sooner, I wouldn’t have accepted it when Kendra offered your hand in marriage to console me that her precious Amber no longer wanted a cripple like me.” He laughed wryly, making Alice’s throat threaten to close up. “But if bandaging it will make you leave me alone, then so be it. There are several kits in the third drawer of this nightstand. Just get on with it.”
“Have your wounds been opening frequently?” She tried to maintain her composure, quickly searching for the small suitcase full of bandages, antiseptics and curatives inside. “The stitches don’t appear to have been sewn badly. It looks more like they were torn open….” Alice narrowed her eyes as she began to clean the wound, making him grind his teeth in pain.
“If you think you can lecture me, then you better get out of here right now, before I throw you out.” That was all Massimo replied, not looking the least bit sorry.
“What do you expect me to say? Please, continue to make unnecessary efforts and open all the wounds you have, so that your condition worsens?” Alice began to cover the wound gently, taking care to tie the bandage extra firmly “I’m sure there were a shortage of doctors to tell you the danger of something like this, Massimo. I hope you learned your lesson from this pain today. If you want to improve, then you need to rest and avoid sudden movements as much as possible…”
“To improve?” Massimo repeated, one of the corners of his mouth raised in an acidic smile and his glazed look “Are you fucking kidding me? Do you have any idea what I went through? The fucking car brake went through my leg and opened this hole, but it was still the least of the doctors‘ problems when I was in the hospital. Do you really think I care about a little blood when I can’t even move my fucking leg? This shit isn’t good for walking anymore, but it’s good for hurting, so fuck it!” He pressed his back against the headboard as her bandage

Instead of answering her, Massimo just remained silent, watching her bandage with a grumpy expression until he finally spoke.
“This clearly isn’t just a student’s job…” he stated, one of his eyebrows raised. “If that’s really true, what the hell were you working as a private nurse? Why didn’t you just finish your college? Weren’t you the one who always told me that this was your dream when we talked?” he seemed to get even more upset when he remembered that time, moving his eyes as far away from her as possible. “Kendra told me that you gave up studying after your child was born, so why…?”
“And you
believed her?” Alice laughed humorlessly. “Well, I hate to burst your bubble, Mr. Bianchi, but my mother was never as understanding as my grandfather. I planned to return to college after Millicent turned two, but before that happened, my grandfather’s health condition worsened and he had to be hospitalized full time… My mother decided there was no need to spend money with something like that. Or anything else related to me. And, as I couldn’t just stand by and let my daughter starve, I needed to look for some families who were willing to accept a home nurse who didn’t have a degree, in exchange for cheaper pay.” She stopped when she noticed the way Massimo was watching her suspiciously.
Telling him the truth was a wasted effort anyway, even if she felt that almost uncontrollable urge to deny in front of him all the things Kendra had certainly said about her.
“Well, this bandage
will help you from not getting that wound infected until a doctor can come check it out.” With a sigh, Alice straightened up, using one of the clean sheets to collect all the others that were covered in blood “I can see that my advice is not worth much to you Massimo, but, at least for tonight, try to keep quiet and avoid stress, to help your body heal.”
“You are right. I don’t want anyone’s fucking advice, including yours.” Massimo spat coldly, pulling the sheets over his limp legs again, hiding them as if he didn’t even want Alice to look at him. “Now that you’ve got what you want, get out!” his voice gradually became louder, until it turned into shouting again “Or I won’t teach you what happens to nosy people in my house!”
“Massimo, this is not a joke.” Alice felt forced to say, distressed “If you think your situation is difficult now, imagine if you had to go back to the hospital to be admitted again…
“I said… Get out!” he roared, slamming his fist against the bedside table, causing all the medicine pills that were up there to fall to the floor, scattering glass, pills and liquid all over

Knowing she wouldn’t get a pleasant answer, Alice just closed the door, putting some kind of wall between herself and Massimo as she tried to catch her breath. She had been so stupid to try to help him instead of simply going to Thea to tell her that he was bleeding, leaving the rest to his doctor… Or, maybe, that had been positive, in a way,
Not only because Massimo’s wound was clean now, but also because his screams could be the poison she needed to kill the girl in love that was still hidden inside her, leading Alice to act as if she were really his wife. 1
God, she thought she stopped being stupid 4 years ago, but apparently not.
But now, with the help of that new Massimo, she would do it. She would leave the young Alice who sighed in the corners behind, burying her in the same place where Massimo’s old personality was now. Whether Massimo wanted to let himself rot or not, then she had nothing to do with it.
Her only responsibility was to make Millicent happy. And nothing more.
