Suddenly, the fog of sleep lifted, and reality crashed into him.
The woman in his arms wasn’t Elizabeth.
She was one of his female subordinates, het wide eyed innocence masking a deeper intent.
Leo’s heart pounded with anger and shame.
He pushed her away so forcefully that she stumbled backward, nearly falling to the ground.

The woman, shocked and embarrassed, fell to her knees on the plush carpet, her head bowed.

“Get out!” Leo barked, his voice dangerously low.
His fists clenched at his sides, struggling to control his rage.

The woman’s face turned crimson with humiliation.
She hastily pulled her coat over her shoulders and scurried from the room, sobbing quietly as the door clicked shut behind her.
When the door closed, the room fell into an oppressive silence.
Leo sank back into the couch, burying his face in his hands.
The anger, the guilt, the unbearable longing for Elizabeth–it all collided inside him, threatening to tear him apart.
He murmured her name softly, almost pleadingly.
“Elizabeth…”

“Alpha, I’ve uncovered the truth about the battle three years ago–the one that led to your injury and the loss of Luna’s family.”
Leo’s expression hardened, but he nodded for Panther to continue.

For a moment, Leo stood frozen, his mind racing as he processed the revelation.
His breath hitched, and his heart pounded in his chest.
For three years, he had carried the weight of that guilt, believing that Elizabeth’s adoptive family had been responsible for his injury, believing that their cowardice had cost him not only his legs, but Elizabeth’s trust.

The Nicholas family was banished, and the new Alpha of Oceanheart came personally to apologize and offer reparations.
But none of it mattered to Leo.
