“Daniel Brown, how’s your relationship with Anna Green? Are you two married yet?” 

1 froze, holding the door handle of the private room. 

I never expected to attend my husband’s alumni gathering and find out that my assistant is my husband’s ex girlfriend. 

“Stop joking around. Daniel Brown brought his wife along.” 

“Really? You and Anna Green were always a famous couple, always together no matter where you went. Why did you break up?” 

Hop’t ask, you’ve really not improved your emotional intelligence over the years.” 

The topic was casually brushed off, but I kept thinking about the conversation. 

Anna Green became my assistant because of Daniel Brown’s recommendation. 

I recalled how Daniel Brown had recommended her back then. 

“You mentioned before that you hadn’t found a suitable assistant?” 

I was a little surprised but also happy that he remembered something I had casually mentioned.

“I have a classmate who’s having trouble finding a job. 1 think her education’s decent, so I thought I’d let her try” 

I was hesitant. I don’t like favoritism in the workplace. If she’s not suitable, would I be putting Daniel Brown in an awkward position?

“Don’t worry, she’s very capable. She’s going through some family 

Hearing him say that, I had no choice but to step back, emphasizing 

“Fine, but just so you know, if it doesn’t work out, I’ll have to let her go.” 

“I knew you were the best, Lily!” 

Daniel Brown walked over and kissed me. 

My fingertips turned white with tension, and I felt a bump in my throat.
