Ashley released him, speechless. She stood there for a long time, her son never once looking up. Finally, she left the room.
Maria met her.“Mrs. Sterling, I called Mr. Sterling. He said he had a business dinner and that you didn’t have to wait up.”
“I understand,” Ashley replied. Remembering what Sam had said, she paused and then dialed Chase’s number.
He answered after a long time, his voice icy.“I’m busy. Not now.”
“Chase, it’s so late, who’s-”

Ashley clutched the phone. Before she could speak, Chase hung up.

That was it. He seemed to have forgotten her birthday completely. She had seen it coming, still, á wave of disappointment washed over her.
