Kathryn’s POV:
Chapter 30
Today, I meticulously dressed up and made my way to Gandillon Group.
Lucian had failed to keep his promise the last time. This time, I was going to make sure he gave his signature, and we would go to City Hall together.
I wanted to leave. I couldn’t wait another moment.
I mentioned my name at the reception, and despite not having an appointment, the staff member quickly escorted me to the CEO’s office on the top floor.
“Mr. Gandillon is waiting for you inside.” The receptionist knocked on the door for me and left.
I pushed the door open and saw Lucian still wearing the clothes from last night’s dinner party. He was sitting in front of the computer reviewing some documents. The moment he looked up and saw me, his eyes lit up.
He rose to his feet.
I shot him a cool glance before averting my gaze. Then, I pulled out the freshly prepared divorce agreement from my bag and placed it on the table. “Sign this first.”
The expression on Lucian’s face turned cold in an instant. “Is this why you’re here?”
“What else would I be here for? I was worried you’d be too busy to deal with this, so I decided to drop by in person.” I glared at him impatiently. “I have to go to work soon, so make it quick.”
Three years into our marriage, I had never once set foot in his place of work. Yet, the moment the receptionist heard my name, she readily let me through.
From this, it was clear that he must have already instructed his workers outside beforehand. He must be well–prepared for our divorce, then.
Lucian pursed his lips as he glanced at the documents on the table. He picked them up, leafing through each page at a leisurely pace.
I gazed at him, my voice laced with sarcasm. “Don’t worry, I’m leaving without asking for anything. I have no interest in any part of your wealth.”
“I-” As soon as Lucian began to speak, his phone rang.
“No, sign this first.” Seeing the man about to put down the agreement to answer his phone, I held onto his hand. “It’ll only take a second.”
With a glance, Lucian rejected the call and continued flipping through the papers.
I picked up a pen and handed it over. “Stop dawdling and just sign the papers already.”
Lucian took a deep breath. Then, he signed his name on the document.
I swiftly handed him another set of papers, watching as he signed his full name once again. Holding the document as if it were some precious artifact, I scrutinized it several times before confirming everything was fine and tucking it into my bag.
Lucian’s copy was promptly stashed away in the drawer.
“Let’s go.” I glanced at the time. “To City Hall.”
Lucian seemed to have something on his mind, but when he lifted his gaze to meet mine, he ended up saying nothing at all.
I had been anticipating this day forever. Regardless of what this man wanted to say, I was determined to put an end to our marriage today, once and for all.
With a stern face, Lucian stood up, grabbed his coat and car keys, and headed straight out. He didn’t call for his driver, instead choosing to take the wheel himself.
Not even wanting to sit next to him, I headed straight to the back row, buckled my seatbelt, and turned my head to look out the window.
The route to City Hall was in the same direction as home.
The scenery along the way was all too familiar.
This would be the last time I went down this path.
Chapter 30
Just as I thought I was fully prepared, a subtle ache began to seep into my heart–as if something was slowly being stripped away
I remained still, allowing that sensation to spread throughout me.
Having a cat for three years could already result in a strong bond. Yet, my past three years of youth and hard work seemed to have been fed to the sharks in the ocean, with not a shred of return.
Despite this moment of liberation finally being upon me, I didn’t seem as happy as I thought I would be,
We both rode in silence, arriving at City Hall without uttering a word. Lucian was the first to get out of the car, and he lit a cigarette.
I took a deep breath, ready to push the door open and step out of the car when the sudden buzzing of my cell phone in my pocket caught me off guard. My hand, which was clutching the door handle, froze for a moment. Then, I glanced at the incoming call, it was my grandmother.
Grandma had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and was currently living in a rural nursing home. It was rare for her to call me. What could have happened for her to suddenly ring me up?
I quickly closed the car door and answered the phone. “Hey, Grandma!”
My grandmother’s voice came from the other end, gentle yet cautious. “Kathryn, where did you say you lived again?”
Then, I heard a series by a wave of impatient chiding. “Hey, old lady, are you getting off or not? I’ve got a whole bus of people waiting here! If you’re not getting off, go sit down!”
Grandma’s voice was muffled as she answered, “I’m getting off! I am! I’m asking where my granddaughter’s house is!”
“Don’t wander around if you have dementia! What if you can’t even afford your trip? Hurry up and get off!”
Oh, God. What is Grandma doing outside on her own?
Shocked and terrified, I hastily pushed the car door open and leaped out. “Where are you, Grandma?”
