Chapter 21 Get the Kid Another Dad

Angela cringed a little. The look in his eyes was so cold, she thought she was freezing up. “I’m not challenging your patience. I’m just abiding by the rules. All I have to do is deliver the baby and give it to you. That’s my job. Aside from that, you don’t get to tell me what to do.”
Conrad hissed, “Do you think Christopher will still date you?”
Angela shook her head quickly. “No. I won’t even fantasize about dating people like you. I’ll just find someone on my own level and marry him. Birds of the same feather, as they say.”
Conrad cocked his eyebrow, and mockery flared within his eyes. Hey, you came to me and tried to seduce me. With how big of a gold digger you are, there’s no way you’ll give up on marrying a rich guy. “I don’t care what you’re planning, but stay away from my family.”
That was an order–an order she must follow, but Angela was not afraid of authority. Yet, she was no greenhorn either. She knew she wouldn’t be able to win in a fight as she was too weak to take on an enemy like Conrad. “I know. You want to keep the marriage and the pregnancy a secret. Don’t worry. I won’t say a word to anyone. If I can’t hide the baby bump anymore, I’ll just get a random guy and tell everyone he’s the father. No one’s going to suspect you.”
Conrad almost choked on himself. What the hell is she talking about? She can’t just find another father for the baby. “I’ll deal with the problems should they arise. Don’t do anything stupid.”
Angela made a face. “You should spend more time on your fiancée, Mr. Heathcliff. Assure her everything is fine. She’s privy to the secret. As long as she stops confronting me to ease her insecurities, no one’s going to suspect that you’re the father.”
Conrad gave her a dark, cursory look. “I’ll deal with Wilhelmina. Just don’t forget what I told
you to do.”
Angela had forgotten all about it. He had no right to stop her from making new friends. “I’m beat. I’m going home.” She bent down and scurried through his underarm, then she ran
away.
Morning came, and Angela got a call from her mother. Her brother’s liver was damaged due to the medication’s side effects. They needed money for his treatment, and her mother demanded an extra fifteen grand. She did as she was told.
When she came to work, HR told her she was promoted to the design department’s manager. She was now on par with Kelly. The news came as a pleasant surprise. She thought the boss would demote her because of her lies, but the opposite happened.
Kelly, of course, was displeased with this arrangement. The moment Angela sat down, she mocked, “You bled so much last time, we thought you had a miscarriage.”

Noticing her provocation, Angela sneered, “I’m single. You must be imagining things. You shouldn’t go around spreading rumors, Kelly. It’s not good for your image.”
Kelly’s lips twitched. “It was just a joke. Don’t mind it. Congratulations on the promotion. You’re good friends with the boss, huh? You were the center of everyone’s attention back at the celebration.”
Huh. Trying to tell everyone I got promoted because I slept with the boss, huh? Angela frowned and took on a solemn approach. “I was seriously hurt back then, and it was thanks to the boss that I was saved, or my leg would’ve been done for. He treats us like family and lends a hand to use when we get in trouble. Shouldn’t we at least be thankful we get a good boss like him?”
She piled on the pressure. “And yet somehow, someone just has to misinterpret his help as an attempt to hook up with his employees, spreading lies and slander behind his back. How could you?”
She raised her voice so the other departments heard her too. That was what she was gunning for. The best way to deal with rumors was to face it head–on and crush it. The more they tried to hide, the more suspicion would brew.
Kelly’s face turned pale and she gnashed her teeth. Fine. You win, but you won’t stay a winner for long. A while later, she reported things to Conrad.
“I see she has settled the rumors between you and her, sir.”
Conrad smiled. He had experienced Angela’s tirade firsthand. If there was an Olympics event for trash–talking, Angela could get the gold medal.
Kevin whispered, “She took another fifteen grand again this morning
Conrad’s smile froze, and it turned into a smirk. Lana says that that woman is thrifty. Never goes shopping and only shops online during discounts. So why did she take thirty grand? Where did she spend it? Did she transfer the money into her account? So, she’s a gold digger and a scrooge.
