Chapter 23
My grave tone was laced with threat as I turned to face her supporter, Leo, and warned him
icily.
“Keep your people in check, Mr. Leo! Next time, the consequences won’t be this mild. It’s my
guarantee!”
Even though my company’s new branch in Lakon city wasn’t stable, dealing with an ordinary hockey player was well within my abilities. I just had to pull some strings, and Leo
would be a part of the past, a new star would quickly take his place.
Leo was a businessman now, so he clearly knew where the actual power lay in the Lakon city. He chose his career over his girlfriend and called the police to escort Melody away.
“If you act up again, you will be out of my mansion for good, Melody!”
His stern warning shushed Melody completely, she didn’t resist when police dragged her away. However, her face full of resentment hinted that it wasn’t over yet. And what a coincidence, I was more than happy to make her lick my shoes next time!
Cursing the entire world, I went to see my Jane and held her weakened figure close to my chest, all set to leave. Zoe, who was standing by her side, spoke all of a sudden.
“I am sorry. I couldn’t protect her.”
That little boy’s apologetic tone warmed my heart, I sighed and patted his head softly.
“I know it’s not your fault, Zoe.”
Leo entered the room after me and heard Zoe’s apology. He knelt down to comfort him as
well.
“You did great, Zoe. Next time, if something happens like this, let me know immediately.”
Well, I would make sure that there would be no next time!
I left, and thanked the doctor and walked towards the door.

Chapter 23
I took Jane away with me, but as I tried to move past the door, a hurried figure brushed past me. It took a moment to recognize that he was Leo’s assistant. I had seen him in his office. He was on his phone, so he didn’t notice my presence, and went to see his boss.
Whatever!
I was waiting for my driver to bring the car to the front door when his statement slithered
into my ears, he was reporting to someone.
“Leo, I have found Laura’s information …”
His words made me pause for a moment, but I remained calm and everything was still
under control.
I called a team of the best pediatricians from all over the city for my Jane’s check–up, and
they all advised her to take the rest.
No school, no practice!
I also took time off from work and stayed at home with my little girl, nothing was more important than her for me.
Thankfully, Jane was fully back on her feet in just two days, relieving my worry. She asked me to cook her favorite pasta, and we cuddled most of the time. This family time was a short break from my daily busy routine.
However, this free time was a golden chance for my past to roam freely in my mind as well. It opened the floodgates of memories that I had deeply buried in my heart.
As usual, Jane and I were watching TV when I thought about her quick healing despite being badly injured, doctors also praised her strong immunity system. Perhaps, it was all about the genes that she had inherited from her father.
The mention of her father took me back five years, flashing the scenes of my distant past in
my mind.

Chapter 23
*Flashback*
five years ago!
After finding out about my pregnancy, Melody took me to the forest where I was brutally beaten up by her guards. Due to cold rain and fatigue, I passed out there, powerless to call anyone for help.
I lost count of how long I stayed unconscious due to exhaustion.
“Where am I?”
This was the first thought that came to my mind as I looked around frantically. A small yet clean room was what appeared before my sight. I found myself lying on the hospital bed.
How did I end up here?
Panic seized the proper functioning of my brain as I couldn’t think of any other reason and called repeatedly.
“Hello? Is anybody here?
Please, help me!”
My breath came out in short, ragged gasps as my heart threatened to break out of my rib cage. I tried to pull the needle out of my hand. A masculine voice followed by the sound of the door opening stopped me hurriedly.
“Don’t pull out this IV. You aren’t healed yet.”
I raised my eyes and saw a middle–aged man with salt and pepper hair, his gentle voice calmed my racing heart.
“I am a doctor in a village infirmary, dear. You were lying on the ground unconscious when I found you in the forest.
So, I brought you here and tried my best to heal you.”
I couldn’t be more thankful to that kind–hearted angel from heaven for saving my life. He asked me to relax and laid down for rest.

Chapter 23
“You must be feeling weak after one month of coma, dear. I will …”
One month?
I almost jumped at the mention of this long period as it felt like I was asleep for a maximum of a day or two. My hand spread over my belly protectively as ominous bells rang in my mind. I questioned him, dwindling between hopes and fears.
“W–What about my baby, doctor? I am pregnant.”
“your son…” The doctor suddenly stuttered, and he rubbed his temple and spoke in a grave
tone without looking my eyes.
